Some more Reference and Ruminations on Integration

A few more videos that I find relevant or inspiring. Cross-media, particularly animation and live action (or just different types of animation) is something I'm wanting to use in my practice, taking the form of a short film. What interests me with the Gorillaz videos is the extent to which they seemingly haven't tried to blend the drawn elements with the CG or practical elements - but at the same time they blend excellently. In my eyes anyway. Disney, Gibli, Hollywood, my last film, they've all been about making everything seemless, making you believe it's all drawn or it's all real for the sake of a fluid viewing experience. The Gorillaz videos here don't worry about that, and it makes for a really good piece of work. I could go into my thoughts on this and what it achieves in a later post.

There is of course some integration, they're not just pasted on. They're affected by light and shadow, but in their own illustrated way. Films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and the Looney Tunes movies obviously want the 2D look but I noticed they went quite far in lighting/rendering effects to make you believe these impossible 2D characters were inhabiting the physical world... which is important for those films, but not something I want to get too involved with.

I'm interested in seeing what the difference in media can do to tell a story, particularly one that might deal with the workings of a character's mind.

More on this to follow.
